THE VAN GOGH SCHOOL

THE STUDIO OF SOUTH

There is a paradigm of the Painting versus Science. The sum of all colors , or of contrasting colors

results :

   - in the black in the Painting (described by Delacroix)

    - in the white in the Light, Spectral Theory of Newton.

From 1889 mainly September, Van Gogh would follow the spectral theory of Newton,

returning to the North (Auvers near Paris).

But during the remaining Painting career Vincent van Gogh (firstly the period 1885-1888) Van Gogh followed the Delacroix way   in search of colour contrasts of the south - that would eventually culminate in the establishment of his own School (The South Studio in 1888) .

from   the letter 538 of VINCENT VAN GOGH   to his brother   THEO VAN GOGH ,   Arles, 18 September   1888

' Now if set up a studio and refuge right at the gates of the South, it` s not such a crazy scheme. And it means that we can work on serenely. And if people say that is too far from Paris, etc, let them, so much the worse for them. Why did the greatest colorist of all, EUGÈNE DELACROIX , think it essential to go South and right to Africa? Obviously because not only in Africa but in Arles onward you are bond, to find beautiful contrasts of red and green, of blue and orange, of sulfur and lilac. '

"        After all, the French know very well, on an advanced country, a revolution can be started by the most innocent citizen; even for them that waste their time painting flowers, as a Dutchman called Vincent Van Gogh " from the book  The Gladioli in Still Life      "

THE VAN GOGH MILLION REVOLUTION

The clear symbol of the STUDIO   OF SOUTH   are the SUNFLOWERS, that Vincent Van Gogh depicted in Paris 1887 till 1889.   The VAN GOGH SUNFLOWERS   also started in 1987 - about 100 years later - a great revolution.   Then was taken   a SUNFLOWERS   $39.7 Million (£24.75 Million) by Yasuo Goto to Helen Beatty which inflated the Painting Market.

Little time after, another VAN GOGH, PORTRAIT OF DR. GACHET    was bought   by Ryoei Saito by $82.50 Million. (Confirming the arrival of the artist to Japan,   his dream, about 100 years later).

If VAN GOGH who lived in the XIX century -   had been a Superstar of the XX   Century, with his Paintings reaching record Prizes, in the first decade of XXI Century the things were a little bit   different.

So during 10 years, 2000-2009   just one VAN GOGH   ,L'Arlesienne (Madame Ginoux),   reached   a great (higher than   $15 Million), in its case $40.336 Million in 2006.

In the total the VAN GOGH AUCTIONS (2000-2009) was reached a value of about $161Million , more or less the double of THE PORTRAIT OF DR. GACHET.

These results against the Web dynamic, where VAN GOGH reached   a great popularity.

But after 2010, the VAN GOGH MILLION REVOLUTION recovered.

So just in 2014 , a VAN GOGH   (Still Life: Red Poppies and Daisies ) reached

   $61 Million.

And in 2015, 11 VAN GOGHS were sold reaching a total amount about of $138 Million just   85% of the amount reached in 2000-2009.

There were 2 great months of the great 2015 VAN GOGH year. The months of May and November which correspond to the   50 years of Portuguese Painter  Helena Amaral   Presentation to the Public.

     - May 1965,   1st Helena Amaral, collective exhibition, Faculdade de Farmácia do Porto ,

       - November 1965 , 1st Helena Amaral, Solo Exhibiton, Ateneu Comercial do Porto
